Copenhagen is located on the Danish island of Amager in the Oresund strait. The city lies on the east coast of the island of Zealand. Copenhagen is since 2000 connected to the Swedish city of Malmo via the Öresund Bridge which is almost 8 km long. The city has an area of 88 square kilometers and about 520.000 inhabitants.

Copenhagen history
Copenhagen was founded between 1160 and 1167 by Bishop Absalon. The name Copenhagen comes from the Danish word "Købmandshavn" which means merchant harbor. The Danish city has received this name because when Copenhagen was founded in the High Middle Ages a trading function was due to its location on the harbor. The port currently has no primary commercial purpose but is mainly used for recreation. It has even become one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world.Copenhagen tourist attractions
The most famous resident of Copenhagen was Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) during his life he wrote many fairy tales like "The Little Match Girl" and "The Little Mermaid". A fun day out in Copenhagen is a trip to the Tivoli amusement park. This park is world famous because it has existed since 1843. The amusement park is located in Copenhagen town. There is a wooden roller coaster to find from 1914 that still serves. Every year the park attracts millions of tourists who enjoy in the evenings the phenomenal lighting in the park.
You will really discover Copenhagen, if you take a boat through the canals of the old town. The boats leave from Nyhavn. This cozy harbor is also worth a visit. You'll find lots of terraces and colorful houses.
If you want to shop for a day then you should go to Strøget. This is the longest pedestrian area in the world. You'll find expensive brands like Chanel and Prada but also cheaper chains like H & M. Street artists show their skills among the shoppers.
